Xiu Xiu - The Sent Down Girl

I enjoyed this film despite how depressing it was. To answer the question posed in the blog prompt, it's difficult. Imagining I was a 13 year old Chinese girl born and raised hearing about Xiu Xiu and other stories stemming from the Cultural Revolution, I would most likely join the Tiananmen protests. I would want to be a part of change for all of the women of China: those that suffered and sacrificed before me, present day women, and finally for future generations. As scary and potentially dangerous as it would be, I would want to do all I could in order to tell my daughter a different story when she is 13.

Hmmmm...hadn't thought about telling "my daughter a different story"...what a great idea...we would want the story to be very different...one that included much less suffering.

Hi Sam - in response to your question about my travel experiences...I have to say I saw the lighter side of things when I visited Ireland and S. Korea. Both places were extremely friendly and didn't warrant a cause for unrest. My only regret was not including N. Ireland in my visit - for some reason my friend didn't want to go there....An excuse to go again, I guess! In Korea the DMZ was visible and I didn't go too close..otherwise you get the sense there's no crime (if you commit a crime you kind of disappear...hmm.)I would return to both place in a heart beat. My next trips are Vienna in May and Italy in 2009 perhaps...What are your travel plans?
